avast! scores (again)

Prague, Czech Republic, August 31, 2009 - avast! has again been recognized with the VB100 award by Virus Bulletin, a leading publication on computer viruses and security issues.

It's certainly not the first time Virus Bulletin has recognized avast! software. "avast! was the first program to catch 100 percent of viruses on Windows," said Vince Steckler, CEO of ALWIL Software, developers of the avast! antivirus program. "That was back in 1996, a few years before they made testing into the VB100 'competition'."

The newest test with avast! Professional Edition was more difficult than in the past. Virus Bulletin added a new RAP anti-malware test for rating heuristic and generic detection abilities and a comparative test of anti-spam capacities. That was in addition to the requirement of detecting 100 percent of "in the wild" viruses and no false positives when scanning clean files.

Competing in the latest VB100 test were 34 antivirus programs running on the Windows Vista Business Edition platform. Eleven of these programs did not pass, including some well-known industry names. A full description of who passed and who did not is in the August edition of Virus Bulletin.

Virus Bulletin has focused on computer viruses since its start back in 1989. The publication has earned a reputation for independent, comparative tests of antivirus products through its VB100 awards. Its annual VB Conference is a industry meeting place for specialists in computer viruses and on-line security threats.
